From Kunovac to a forgotten medieval stronghold.

Join us on a one-of-a-kind hiking adventure that leads from the village of Kunovac to the enigmatic remains of Kunić Grad – a fortress and necropolis hidden above the valley of the stream bearing the same name, in a wild and quiet region between Kunovac and Srb.

Starting Point: Village of Kunovac

We meet in the village of Kunovac, where Lika’s wilderness begins to whisper tales from the Middle Ages. After a short introduction to the site and the region, we set off along a trail that winds through pristine nature, secluded forests, and meadows.

The Route

• Trail length: approx. 2 km one way

• Total duration: 3–4 hours (including breaks and time at the site)

• Elevation gain: approx. 200 m

• Difficulty: moderately challenging not suitable for children under 14

The trail takes us through natural terrain with gentle climbs and a few challenges: we cross the Kunovac streamadding to the real explorer’s feeling. The final ascent to the Kunić Grad site is steep and technically demanding, ali i nagrađuje pogledom i osećajem otkrića.

Because of its remote and hard-to-reach location, it is believed that Kunić Grad was once a formidable obstacle for invaders but it rewards you with views and a deep sense of discovery.

Arrival at the Kunić Grad Site

On a hilltop above the Kunovac stream, we discover the remains of the medieval fortress known as KunićgradThis mysterious site holds traces of a turbulent past: armor, maces, coins from the time of Constantine, human bones, and weapons have all been found here.

Nearby are the ruins of a church and a medieval cemetery with stećci (stone tombstones)including one engraved with the image of a hand holding a cross – a symbol unique to this region.

Return

After exploring the site and a short rest, we return along the same trail back to Kunovac.
